If you’ve ever owned a cat at the same time you’ve had a flower garden you know what a challenge it is to keep the cat from using the bathroom amidst the flowers. So much for the luscious aroma of your beautiful flowers. There’s a few steps you can take, though, to eliminate the problem without phasing the cat.

Many gardeners, when faced with the problem of litter box garden beds run straight to the store shelf that contains repellents for just such occasions. The commercial repellents generally work well but may contain methyl nonyl ketone – a poisonous chemical spray which should never be used on food plants.

Avoiding harsh chemicals is a matter of choosing a more natural way to turn away cats. Sprays that contain hot pepper or oil of mustard work well and are less dangerous to the cat. Spray the liquid every few days or after rainfall. Be sure and follow instructions on the package as to how much and how often to spray, or what plants must be avoided with the sprays.

You can mix up sprays at home and spray around flower gardens to run off animals as well. Vinegar is a good deterrent and is all-natural. Most animals don’t like the smell and will avoid it. Spray juice from store-bought peppers onto the plants and this will also encourage animals to go elsewhere.

If you have a sprinkler it’s a good way to deter cats from the flower beds. Set the timer to go off at random times. The flower beds will stay damp and cats hate wet dirt. They’ll go elsewhere to do their business simply because it’s more comfortable to do so.

If you don’t have kids you can keep an outdoor sandbox made strictly for the cats. Cats love sand and will be pleased to use the area for their outdoor bathroom. And with a scoop it’ll be easy to keep the area cleaned.

If you have kids and want to use the sandbox method, make a small vinyl roof, attached to four skinny metal poles, to place over the sand box. Cats love to explore and will be immediately drawn to the area, and the roof can be placed close to the sandbox to deter children from getting into the box. The roof can simply be lifted off for cleanup.

Some gardeners use chicken wire to keep cats away from flowers. Lay the chicken wire around the flower bed, cover with soil, then worry no more. When cats try to use the bathroom, and they start scratching at the dirt like cats do, they will not like the chicken wire catching their claws and will go elsewhere.

Farm and garden stores sell a mat-type product that is laid around the flower beds to prevent cats from using the area. The mats are plastic and have small spikes that cats don’t like. The spikes are also plastic, and won’t hurt the cat, but will keep the cat from coming back to that particular area.

There are some plants that naturally make cats flee. One is called Coleus Canina. Some nurseries label the plant “scardey-cat” or “dog’s gone” but the odor coming from the plant sends cats running. The plant has dark green leaves with blue flower spikes and is very attractive, but not to animals.

Roses can give your yard a wonderful splash of color. And, there are so many varieties you are sure to find a rose that will suit your needs. Here are some tips to help you make smart choices when you are buying your roses from a mail-order catalog or online.

There are thousands of rose cultivators who offer their roses in catalogs and on websites. You will find a larger variety from these resources than any local garden shop or nursery can hope to carry. Sellers who use catalogs and websites to sell their roses fill a critical need. It is possible that you can find every type of rose you would like to grow from one individual seller. However, you need to know what to look for. You do not want to get the roses in the mail, go to all the trouble to plant them, and then have them die.

Ask other rose gardeners that you know if they have dealt with any mail-order or online companies that sell roses. Try to use only those companies that people you know in person have used. This is a good way to avoid buying sub-par roses.

If the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There is no deal good enough if the plants end up in your compost pile. Again, ask your friends if they have bought from the discount company. If they have, ask if you can see the roses that were purchased from these companies. In this way, you can see what you will be getting. Ask them what they have had to do to get the roses to thrive.

Look at the same type of rose in several different catalogs or on several different websites. See how the descriptions compare. If the discount rose gardener makes claims the others do not, you may be dealing with a con-artist.

Check out the front of the catalog and read the introduction from the rose gardeners. You should also look at the order blank. If the growers are selling good roses, there should be specifics on the size, age, and grade of the roses. The shipping information and whether the plants are own-rooted or grafted should be available. There should also be detailed descriptions of the replacement guarantees and any substitution policies. If you can not find this information, move on to the next catalog.

Learn what the descriptions of the roses really mean. For example, if a grower says the flower has a “light scent”, the rose probably has very little fragrance. And, if the catalog description says the flowers are “exhibition-quality” then the flowers will be beautiful, but the plants may not be suitable to use in landscaping projects. Be sure you are getting the full picture.

Do not be so overwhelmed by the good qualities or promises in the description that you miss what is not included. Terms such as “fragrant,” “disease-resistant,” and “attractive foliage,” are some of the desirable qualities you want your roses to have.

And, for the best selection, it is advisable to purchase as soon as possible after the catalogs are published. Your roses should not be shipped until it is time to plant in your area. But, ordering early will help guarantee you will get the roses you desire.

Buying your roses from a mail-order catalog or online is a good way to get quality roses for a lower price. You will also be able to choose from a much larger variety. But, be smart and do not let yourself be swindled. Hopefully, these tips will help you make smart purchases when you are looking for roses to plant in your yard.

Too often flowers are planted because that’s the thing to do. Sometimes it’s that old springtime urge that leads to planting more than we can maintain. Other times it’s just poor planning. Whatever the reason there’s an awful lot of poorly planted and neglected gardens.

To avoid the pitfalls or garden headaches, use the same method you should use in building a house. Make plans so the garden serves you. Too many people make themselves a slave to their garden and grounds. If you really enjoy gardening, the sky is the limit. If you like to golf, travel or engage in other activities that take you away from home, better keep your maintenance at a minimum.

Once you decide just how much time and effort you want to put into gardening, you should decide when you want flowers. Most people want flowers from spring to fall, but some prefer seasonal displays. For instance, the majority of rock garden plants bloom in the spring and the remainder of the year is made interesting by foliage colors and textures. Perennial flowers will live for several years without replanting, but have a definite period of bloom during the growing season. Thus, you need to select various perennials with different blooming periods to assure a succession of blooms for the entire season. Annual flowers live but one growing season and yet will bloom most of that time. So, it takes some picking and choosing to have flowers when you want them.

Once you have selected what you feel will provide you with the flowers you want, check on their culture. The rose is probably the most popular of all flowers. It is also one of the hardest to grow to perfection. Many grow roses but few do a really good job. I like dandelions, but few people grow them or they are much too weedy. In between these extremes you will find all degrees of ease of culture. By reading, looking or asking you can find out if this one or that is what you want to grow.

Here again I can draw a comparison to house hunting. The location of your border or garden will be a strong factor in the enjoyment of your flowers. Few of us have the time to sit in a chair each day and gaze serenely over the garden I have created. I do like to have it located so I can glance out a window or door at various times of the day to observe the changing light patterns on my flowers. If it is so located as to be a part of the house or patio, so much the better. It is important, however, that it be visual from at least some rooms in my home.

Thus, my enjoyment is doubled. I can’t always find the ideal location for a garden on every property. I have to compromise. Most flowering plants require full sun. If you don’t have it, there are plants that will grow well in shady locations. The selection, however, is much more limited. A garden should have a good background. Most flowers look and grow better because they are less exposed to wind and cold. If this can’t be provided youmay have to choose lower growing plants that hug the ground.

Usually you are stuck with the type of soil that is native to your area. You can take what you have and improve it if it does not meet your growing requirements. The soil is the foundation upon which you build your garden. Most garden soils can stand improvement. Usually some form of organic matter should be added and thoroughly worked into the soil before you plant anything. This can consist of peat moss, leaf mold, compost or well-rotted manure (If you can find it). At the same time a fertilizer such as 5-10-10 can be added at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of ground area. If your soil is on the acid side, ground limestone can be added at about 5 pounds per 100 square feet.

All of these materials should be thoroughly blended into the soil. Now you are ready to plant. You will probably be dependent on annuals the first year. Perennials will find their way into your garden, for they have several advantages over annuals. Besides lasting for several years, permanent color effects can be planned and a succession of bloom can be worked out. Best of all, you obtain maximum effect for the least amount of labor.
